Background
Sixteen years ago, McCarty began her teaching career at Taos High
School. At first, she taught accounting. She has taught math at Taos
High School expanding into the Leadereship classes the past few years
and acting as Taos High School's Activities Director. She was also a
part- time business instructor at the University of New Mexico-Taos.
Hobbies
Mrs. McCarty includes her children's involvement in soccer and
basketball as one of her favorite interests. She and her husband, Monty
make themselves available for these activities. Her personal
hobbies include sewing, reading and gardening. She enjoys "making
clothes, quilts and crafty projects. Most of my reading lately has been
for school. However, I enjoy reading -- period -- and that includes
mostly anything. My gardening involves producing vegetables for the
family, as well as landscaping," McCarty shared.
An athlete herself during high school and college, McCarty played
volleyball, basketball, track and golf in high school, continuing with
volleyball and intramural sports in college. She was the head volleyball
coach in Questa in 1992 and 1993 as well as an assistant track coach; in
Taos, she’s served as an eighth-grade volleyball coach and assistant
varsity coach, and also coached youth soccer and assisted in youth
basketball. She said she aims to reinvigorate the community’s interest
in Taos sports.
Future Goals
“My passion has always been student athletics,
student activities,” she said. “We want them to be good students and
good athletes.” “The kids work really hard, and they just do better when
there’s support,” McCarty said. “The goal I have is really building back
all the community involvement in the program. I want to get the
community involved, get the stands packed again.”
Growing up in Raton, she said it was well-known when the high school
teams were playing, and she wants to increase that sort of awareness in
Taos. “Businesses in town would purchase flags, and on Friday nights
those flags would be flying. You would drive downtown and know there was
a game,” she said.
