Coach Hernando “Nando” Chavez is a 2002 graduate of Taos High School. During high school Coach Chavez competed in both Cross Country and Track. In 2008, he received his B.A. in elementary education from New Mexico Highlands University and shortly thereafter began his teaching career with the Taos Municipal Schools. His first coaching stint came in 2005, when he took the position of Taos High School Girls Basketball C- Team coach. He served in that position for seven years. Since his first coaching job, Coach Chavez has held various assistant coaching positions including JV Boys Baseball Coach, 8th grade Boys Basketball coach and assistant Boys and Girls Track and Cross Country Coach. Additionally, he also was the Taos Middle School Athletic Coordinator from 2014 to 2019. As an assistant coach, he has had the opportunity to be a part of 11 state titles in track and cross country and numerous district championships. In 2017, Coach Chavez was hired as the Taos High School Head Boys Basketball Coach. In his first three years, he has guided the Tigers to three district tournament titles and two state quarterfinal appearances. Currently, Coach Chavez is a Physical Education Teacher at Taos High School. In his free time he enjoys spending time with his wife and children and hitting the trails for a run or hike. He credits all the fellow coaches he has either worked under or along side with for being blessed with the opportunity to lead the storied Taos Tiger Boys Basketball program.
